Welcome to August! This is one of my favorite months of the year, because no matter where you live, it’s pretty much beautiful everywhere.

Time always seems to move a bit more slowly in August, maybe it’s the humidity, or just the human mind attempting to stretch before embracing the feelings of heading back to work or school in September.

Where I live, all schools tend to start right after Labor Day, a holiday that always occurs at the beginning of September, which tends to mark August as the last month of summer vacation in the hearts and minds of any adult or small child who’s familiar with this system

Because of the slow moving times, that represent the close of summer, I decided to go with a slow-motion reading deck this month.

Introducing, The Gypsy Lore Fortune Telling Cards!

This deck consists of 45 cards of sturdy, playing card quality, which even after 88 years after first print, is a thick matte cardstock.

The cards are petite, so if you have smaller hands or like to do card magic, this deck would be one for you because of the size.

Petite hands can shuffle the cards and flip them without too many fumbles, so for a woman with petite hands, like myself, it’s so easy to shuffle.

This particular copy I purchased from Jinxed Philadelphia, a shop known all around the area for affordable 19th and 20th century artifacts, including books, maps and paper items, like divination decks.

Though it’s a historical piece, I’ve been doing readings from it for at least three years now.

The NY History Museum dates this deck as being printed in 1932, and given some of the imagery on the deck, such as the war planes with specific markings on some of the cards, this sounds about right.

Also, around the 1930s and 1940s, a lot of really great psychic periodicals were produced, including other zodiac guides and dream guides.

The deck comes with three suits - one without numbers, one with numbers, and one with numbers underlined, in addition to a wish card, a querent card, and two direction cards.

All pertain to practical matters of life, home, business, relationships, and the manners of communication and travel at the time.

The cards without numbers pertain to a situation where time is uncertain, the cards with numbers, pertain to a situation where time involves months, and the cards with numbers underlined, pertain to something happening within that number of weeks.

Essentially nothing in this deck happens in less than a week, except for perhaps the Surprise Card, meaning that when you read from this deck, you generally always have some time to think over your reading before things start to shift.

It’s directions rely heavily on the reader asking or having a single question to ask, about himself or another person, or having a wish.

Because of that, I only ever come to this deck with either a question or a wish.

So to begin, if you are viewing this card of the month as a reading, ask a question in your mind and below I’ll cover:

  • An overarching card for the question

  • Three cards that indicate:

    • card one - what got you here

    • card two - what’s happening now/what you can do to move into the future

    • card three - the outcome of the question, given card two is acted upon

Consider this reading as taking about a month, or one week per card, to fully resolve and settle your question.

Ask your question and or close your eyes and make a wish, and let’s begin -

2- Travel

From the top position, we have the 2 - Travel card.

The first card this month, representing the overarching energy, is an underlined two Travel Card. To me, the underlined numbers symbolize hard movement.

In this deck, Travel in a matter of weeks, and twos, to me, always symbolizes something that is done in a partnership. Success is had with two suits, when something is done with another.

What immediately jumps out about this card is the airplane that makes up the bulk and centerpiece of the image.

Based on the markings and style, it immediately came to mind as an early American war plane.

Though the brand isn’t labeled, the plane appears to look a lot like the Boeing F4B-4, which was, according to the Smithsonian, the airplane that carried Boeing through the Great Depression.

So, it’s automatically kind of a heroic card suggesting movement happening on your question or wish within a couple of weeks.

The card’s messages itself reads:

  • Sudden journey which will result in complications.

  • You will meet an old friend who has traveled far.

  • Journey or change in residence.

This card indicates a sudden movement or redirection. It can also mean a meeting with someone whose travels are going to change the direction of your wish.

This says strongly that in August, a sudden change occurs, but given the symbolism of the plane, it’s a change that ultimately leads to a lot of good happening.

For example, hundreds of people keeping their jobs, a company staying in business, or some hardship is sailed right through due to a shift, journey or movement that happens at the start of August and through mid-month.

So in August, a travel situation highlighting the month is shaking things up, but it’s good.

First Card - what got us here

10 - Married Woman

Okay so now that we know the theme, we can understand what got us here, the most recent past. For the most recent past, we have Card 10 - The Married Woman.

This is the card that got us here.

The card itself symbolizes a mature-looking woman with waved, set hair, in an apron, and she appears to be involved in baking something, due to the baking bowl set she’s holding and the milk-looking jar on the table in front of her.

The number 10, to me, always means a restart, so sometime over the past ten weeks, a married woman invited a restart. She could be you or another person, usually the first person that comes to mind.

One symbolizes leadership and new, and zero symbolizes a baseline, or a back to neutral.

So tens tend to mean that a cycle has been completed and it’s restarted.

The Married Woman has brought us to the point of asking the question.

This card holds nothing back, as the messages on the card read:

  • A woman is going to tell you a lie that will hurt you.

  • A woman will soon invite you to her home - go.

  • Quarrel with a dear friend.

The messages appear that this Married Woman’s influence is either neutral or doesn’t appear to be immediately good, but as we know in readings, something that appears bad, can actually be a catalyst for positive change.

So something happened in the immediate past with a mature, prudent looking woman, or something may have already initiated the situation we’re in now.

The Married Woman’s influence, given the number 10 with the underline on the deck has been one that’s lasted around 2.5 months, or an interaction with one in the past 2.5 months has affected this wish or question. This card always feels like we’re talking about a prudent person.

Second Card - what’s happening now/what you can do to move into the future

11 - Move

For the present moment card, we literally have the Move card. It suggests moves are being made and that perhaps you are moving to something better - given the 11 on this card.

Eleven to me, typically indicates a solid new beginning, or a solid validation, that the person seeing this number is in a leadership position starting something new.

When you see lots of 1s, 11s, or 111s around often it means a new start or new lead is beginning, so this suggests that this month, a move is both occurring and it has to occur.

Either you are physically going somewhere else, or you are emotionally or spiritually making a shift in your directions. Perhaps you are even putting your focus elsewhere temporarily to shift the focus away from the Married Woman, who can also be a committed woman.

I see move card a lot when someone is making a change in their life, it’s the quintessential “moving onto better things card,” and on the card, the passages read -

  • Advancement.

  • Deliberate before making a move.

  • Opposition to a plan will come from unexpected quarters.

This card says that the reader, or whoever they are reading for, is looking to make a move, and this move will result in an advancement, just be deliberate and prepare for safeguards and security as you make that move.

Preparing for the unexpected, such as having to answer questions about your move, but you are shifting.

This card says that a move in the present is necessary and happening, but just prepare for any opposition and be prepared to deliberate, and it will result in an advancement of some kind in the direction of your wish.

So this is a good positive card, it indicates a change is taking place. Also, next to the Married Woman, it indicates that if there was a conflict with a Married Woman or an event started by one, you are moving away from this rather swiftly this month.

Third Card - the outcome of the question, given card two is acted upon

Proposition

For the third card, we have the numberless Proposition card, which happens to be one of the most provocative cards in the deck. The numberless nature of this card suggests that the time for this card is uncertain, so be prepared for it to happen unexpectedly.

In the Proposition card, a man in a business suit with a pipe approaches a sitting woman with glasses who appears interested in what the smoking man is saying or presenting.

The woman is wearing a red dress suit, and glasses, and holding a paper which appears to have a certificate on it, indicating that she does hold some power and is possibly educated or well-off.

This card always says, be open to a new idea or a new proposition coming your way, and be willing to listen.

Given the positioning of the characters in the card, it appears the proposition-maker is a male.

Whenever a smoking man appears in any Oracle, this typically indicates a thinking-man, and in this deck, he presents an idea. So if you are the man, you may be approaching someone with a new idea. If you are the woman, be open to a thoughtful man approaching you with an idea.

This card doesn’t say anything’s been decided, it just says a well-dressed man and a learned woman appear to discuss an idea. Both look curious and interested.

This card says, the idea of a lifetime may be being discussed.

The Proposition card reads:

  • A long, nourished ambition is coming to realization.

  • A business offer soon, accept.

  • Some event or person will light the way out of darkness.

This is a very positive card to see coming up in the future position, or in the outcome position of the reading: the ultimate light at the end of the tunnel.

This card softly but powerfully says something good related to the answer is going to show up and it will likely appear first as an idea someone offers to you or an idea you offer to someone.

So to recap, for August

This month, it appears that a situation involving a committed, mature or prudent woman has resulted in or created a need for a move to another place, perhaps even a shift in where you focus your energy, which then leads to something good - a proposition that could solve everything.

To get to the proposition point, the second card highly suggests that you will have to make a move, whether a shift in your behavior, a shift in where your energy is focused, or a move to an actual new physical place.

If you’ve been thinking about switching things up, the cards say now's a great time for it, and that doing so will result in movement, that could bring travel or even friends who travel.

The overarching card being Travel this month, it feels like a shift is happening in a major way in August, so if you are looking for a breakthrough on some long-standing matter, be prepared for one.

All in all this is looking like an optimistic August and we come to Summer’s end with a move, some fun involving travel, and a potentially great new idea.

Stay open to the idea of travel this month and connecting with those who do, know it will result in positive things happening. Also, a suggestion could be made this month that changes everything.

Liked this deck? Have it at home?

A few tips for a better reading with this deck -

When reading fortune cards, use the numbers, the imagery and the messages written on the cards themselves to determine their response to your question.

Pay attention to the symbolism that jumps out to you most to build your reading, using intuition to guide the rest.

Another way to read this deck, is to use the numbers on the cards as days and weeks, if you are reading for a faster result.

This deck suggests that you read from it no more than three times a day. This is true with most Oracle Card readings.

The energy doesn’t change that much in a day so after three readings you usually get the same reading over and over. So if you pull more than three times, if you get the same thing just mixed up in different ways, this is how it is for everyone who tries to pull more than three oracles in a day on the same subject.

The directions of this deck also read that only messages right side up apply. So if you get a reversal when using this deck at home, throw it out. One reversal in a reading, I sometimes let it stand depending on placement.

If all the cards are a reversed, I take that as a sign I need to step away and try the reading again when the energy is clearer.
